Commissioner Lin at Canton, 1839 | Lucas Davis

One month ago, I was told
through the death of the Emperor’s son,
that we were at war.

I met the British on the beach,
and seized their ammunition –
the Lethean cannonballs –
and ordered them away.

Now, in midsummer heat,
watching opium empty into the sea,
I cry out my prayer:

Ocean – you who carried such evil men,
where we now dispose of this bitter sap –
I’m sorry. You don’t deserve such poisons.
